Moral of the Story
People all around the world were glued to the television set as the Chilean miners were each pulled from the bowels of the earth after the ground collapsed in a mine.
As an educator, I felt that this tragedy turned victory had many lessons to learn:
-Before taking the students into the depths of a lesson, concept or skill, make sure that their minds are girded to experience success (scaffolding)
-Make sure that there is an emergency escape in case their understanding caves in and they are unable to withstand the pressure (intervention)
-Create an environment that students will want to work together to ensure that everyone is successful (learning community)
-Work like the dickens to make sure that each person in your classroom gets pulled up from despair to enlightenment (lesson planning, tutoring and differentiation)
-Celebrate the victories as students experience success...one student at a time (rewards, praise and ongoing assessments)
The moral of the story.....no matter what the situation looks like...success is possible!
