Who Else Is On Your Campus?
I had the distinct pleasure of speaking to some students who are pursuing a degree in social work at USC. The professor assigned "And Still We Rise" as a requirement for the class. I am featured in the book by the nickname my Crenshaw students gave me "Mama Moultrie".
Even though the class ended at 7 p.m., the entire class stayed and we talked...and talked...and talked...for an additional hour! I was honored that they wanted me to autograph their books.
The "issues" of School Districts, School Sites, Administrators, Teachers, Parents, Students...the whole educational process can be extremely complicated and sometimes downright overwhelming!
As classroom teachers and parents, you must understand that there are qualified social workers available to provide direct or indirect services in the areas of mental, emotional and physical health. There are so many teachers who have knowledge of their students' challenges and really don't know how to find the help their students so desperately need!
Often, students will suffer silently without ever asking for the help! Know your students, watch the signs..YOU may be the very key to unlock the "secrets" of a child's personal demons or family dysfunctions.
I encourage all school staff to seek the services of social workers and other support staff.
You should absolutely know who else is on your campus!
P.S. If there are any USC students reading this blog....please know that I truly loved spending those precious moments with you!
Love you all...Mama Moultrie :)
